Via substitution

You have two equations:

#x = 4y -16# & # x -2y = 8#

Because #x# and #y# are in both equations we can substitute one into the other.

Substitute the first equation into the second:

#(4y -16) - 2y = 8#

Now group your #y# terms:

#-16 + 2y = 8#

Now solve for #y#:
